4fm is one of Ireland’s newest (and already one of Ireland’s best) radio stations. It has a multi-city license broadcasting to Cork, Dublin, Limerick and Galway cities - and, for some reason, to all of County Clare. Aimed at an older (>35) audience, they play more easy-listening and less pop/chart tracks… plus they have the excellent Peter Dickson (the voice of ‘E4′ in the UK, also known as “Voiceover Man”) providing their idents, and that lovely fellah Brian McColl presenting a very entertaining show Monday to Friday, 2 to 5pm.

Part of Brian’s show - the whole middle part, in fact - is the “Oldies Hour”, where listeners get to email in their list of favourite oldies (anything up to the early/mid-eighties) and the playlist for that whole hour is chosen from their list. I sent Brian a list of 27 songs a few weeks ago, before I went on holidays, and he held out on featuring them until I came back… until today, in fact!

Here’s a clip of the intro to the hour with a little bit of ‘banter’ between Brian and Peter Dickson:

And here’s the list of songs played:

The passing of a modern icon

mjacksonI really can’t sufficiently put into words the magnitude of the death of Michael Jackson - or what it means to me, the music world at large and his literally millions of fans around the planet. I really can’t properly express the shock and dismay his death has caused and how simply very very sad it is to see him go - he was a Peter Pan type character who, even at the age of 50, had stubbornly refused to leave childhood - and now, I guess, will never have to.

As I say, I can’t sufficiently explain the impact this death has had (..He’s like the Elvis of our generation in many respects.. you’ll remember where you were when he died won’t you? I was serving pints in my local. Wish I wasn’t.) - but that’s okay, because Rubot and Lottie have both done excellent jobs at explaining it, and Germaine Greer has written an excellent article in the Guardian which I find myself completely agreeing with.

I’m sure, in many ways, he was a tortured soul - never actually being able to live life like a normal human being, always being in the public gaze since he was a very young child, becoming extremely eccentric and constantly - unnaturally - defying his age. I’m sure his torture is ended now. I’ve pretty-much ignored all the jokes - many of them pretty nasty - that have started flying around about him - while, thankfully, I’ve received none by text to my phone myself (- and anyone who knows me, knows that if they do send me any tasteless jokes about someone who has died by text or whatever, they can count themselves out of my contact list pretty quickly). Show some respect. The man has died. It’s a sad and tragic event - don’t mock him - let him rest in peace.

I’d say the latest Q Magazine will sell well…

Free Tibet!

Wandered down to our local community leisure centre today as there were supposed to be some jewellers there who wanted to BUY EVERYONE’S GOLD FOR CASH. Ahem. Anyway, the fuckers didn’t turn up, which was a shame ‘cos I’ve an engagement ring to offload.

Heading back up, I stopped off in the coffee shop to buy a bottle of water… it was a warm day today. The shop assistant, a foreign girl, looked at me for a couple of seconds and asked “Have you been to Tibet?” … to which I answered, “eh, no…” and she says “ah, my friend there. Fair play you for wearing t-shirt supporting them!”.

Of course, she never read the small print…

I was wearing this t-shirt:

Smuggler’s Cove

Only back a while from what turned out to be a 2 week holiday instead of an entire summer in Zakynthos. Will put up a more comprehensive post about my Zante experience at some stage, but for now, here’s a video I took of the shipwreck at Smugglers Cove (Navagio) on the north west of the island.
