Via DownloadSquad:

A group of Oxford University researchers have developed a Java-based x86 emulator. That means it can run on a computer, in a web browser, or pretty much anything that runs Java, including mobile phones.

They even have an online demo which runs FreeDOS with a few games mounted on the C: drive just to show off what JPC can do. It needs 64MB of RAM to run, so many Java platforms (such as most current Java capable mobile phones) won’t be able to run it. Right now, all it means is that it’s one of the most convoluted ways of playing old DOS based games via a web browser but it surely bodes well for the future… doesn’t it? Surely it means that eventually you’ll be able to run any OS you like on any (Java capable) platform you like.

OSX on your fridge, anyone? Windows 98SE on your dishwasher?
