Yesterday came the good news - so good, I even twittered about it as soon as I saw it announced on BBC News 24 during my lunch break - that Alan Johnston was freed with the help of Hamas after 114 days in captivity. A great day, as I said, for the BBC and for journalists in general.

It was also a good day (although the weather didn’t help) for Dundalk FM who held their 4th of July Hoe Down - an outdoor party with the incredibly popular Kick-Ass Country show going live to the world, taking interviews from America and from guests in studio (myself included) sending their best wishes to American cousins.

It was good fun and the evening was toppped off well with the presentation of the Alec Fennell Perpetual Shield Award for the volunteer who contributed the most to the station throughout the year. It was awarded to Jason Kelly, presenter of Rehab Care on Air and contributor and assistant on numerous other programs and outside broadcasts. I couldn’t think of anyone who deserved it more.
