Harry Potter and the DJ of Doom

Back in the day (about 3-4 years ago), when I lived in Ardee with Sorcha, everything was “… of doom”. It was a running in-joke between ourselves. Dunno where it came from really, but it was a laugh. The Fridge of Doom. The bedroom of doom. etc. etc. – and I did a few DJ gigs over there, and was quickly nicknamed the DJ of Doom. I even printed up a t-shirt with a logo.

This Friday night, for the launch of the new Harry Potter book ("Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows"), Easons in Dundalk have asked me to do some DJ’ing for them (with, apparently, sufficiently ‘doomy’ music as to suit the book/movie/franchise). Easons in Dublin get 2FM’s Rick O’Shea, – Easons in Dundalk get me. Sounds fair!

From what I gather, the store will close at it’s usual time on Friday night (9pm) only to re-open from midnight to 2am JUST to sell Harry Potter merchandise. There’ll be a disco party with a spooky atmosphere, all the staff in costume, a bunch of free stuff being given away and plenty more besides. (Trying to get Dundalk FM on board too…). Plus, apparently, the book is going for half-price on the night. The music kicks off at about 11.30pm, before the shutters come up to let the awaiting masses in…

Easons is in the Marshes Shopping Centre in Dundalk (next door to the 3 store, where I have my regular job).

Well- that was great fun! An estimated 700-800 people turned up and queued for over 2 hours to get their hands on the new book. The soundtrack was playing from about 10pm with my ‘disco’ music kicking in from 10.30 until 11.50pm when we started the soundtrack stuff again for the countdown to midnight, playing out the last 3 minutes or so with dramatic ‘heartbeat’ sound effects and then a big countdown.

All the staff were in costume and the whole place was looking sufficiently spooky.

Got home about 2am ;)
