Hi there! First time here? Feel free to subscribe to my RSS feed. If you like what you read, you can vote for me on IrishBlogs.info. Thanks for visiting!
I just got an email, that - if I click the convoluted and badly spoofed “genuine looking” URL in it - sends me an EXE file to download (called video.exe). Strangely enough, it’s fairly obvious from the URL that it’s going to do that so I NARROWLY avoid clicking it.
Nothing strange there. Nothing strange either about the collection of random words from the dictionary at the bottom of the email, after the URL, designed to fool spam detectors in email clients. They don’t work. The email arrived in the Junk Email folder.
No, the strange thing in this email was the subject, which was:
“what a stupid face you have here, Niall”
Great, eh? I mean, I’ve seen kind and thoughtful spammers, but rude and offensive ones? Yes, - that subject TOTALLY endeared me, egging me on further - definitely made me want to open the email and download and run whatever they told me to…
Yes…
Totally.

I got the exact same one!
I think it’s banking on people’s vanity/insecurity to just wildly click the .exe
Are people that bad?
I’d love to know the successful infection rate for these things
or know how much viagra actually gets sold because of unsolicited spam.
Ah I don’t know. It’s something different - I mean hey, you opened it, right?
Anthony, sales are miniscule - .000000001% approximately. Not sure about inection.
Most viagra gets sold from redirected search terms in Google to spammy vvvviaaagra dealers who sell it that way. Try it. Put in “Satisfy a woman in bed” and I’d say you’ll be on some blackhat SEO site within 5 clicks.
I opened it, yes - but didn’t click any links, and I knew when opening it that it was spam.
Just got it again from another source into an account I forgot I had, this time the subject being “what a stupid face you have here webmaster” and the link in the mail going to a redirect script on dogpile.com with the redirect URL taking us to “video1.exe” hosted on the server impreselavoro.it
Super dodgeh!
When was the last time you had a facial IQ test? Does your face read books, or does it just sit around drinking beer and watching TV? What are your face’s interests?
Maybe your face really is stupid?
Ah you’re only saying that because after chatting to you this evening you know I’ve spent the last few hours playing football and then sitting around drinking beer and watching TV…
Still though, don’t see the relevance to the post
